Ivy and Alaina joined Roxy, Allison, Cody and 2 friends on Saturday afternoon to unload 747 bales of beautiful brome hay delivered to Cheval Pond by Fisher Farms of Sedgwick, KS. With the help of “super hook” technology, the kids stacked all the hay into the barn in about 4 hours. Luckily, the temperature was only 82 degrees – amazing for mid-August in Oklahoma. Now, cross fingers, we will get hay for the WOR this week.
All the girls worked just as hard as the guys; after we returned to the WOR, the twins unloaded another 18 bales of Mallory’s leftover hay from last year into our barn when we got home. Their day was pretty exhausting since we rode at the party lesson and they ran 2 miles as well. Both slept in on Sunday.
The Saturday weather was spectacular – sunny and mild with a light breeze. A large group gathered at Patty’s for the PARTY LESSON and lunch. The girls’ lesson included Sydney/Sophie, Marilyn/Dante, Ivy/Kismet and Alaina/Sunny. Ivy worked in a few jumps after all the girls practiced horsemanship. Kizzy really needs to learn a halt. Sunny needs to halt less abruptly. In the Ladies’ lesson, Kathy/Call, Marsha/Latte, Nancy/Norman, Mary/Beau, Marilyn/Little Rock and me/Splash worked in Patty’s magic outdoor arena. Splash started out a bit resistant and even went to buck when Latte tripped in front of us in the deeper end of the arena. I reminded Splash that bucking is a bad idea and we continued to work (Larry thinks I should pay him to take Splash off my hands and he could be right). We continued to work on canter but moved to the higher end of the arena where the footing is firmer. Splash gets pretty strung out at the canter so I tried to tap the whip and follow with half-halt to get collected and shorten the wheel base. Very hard work for both of us but we made progress and Splash felt springy in the canter. Whew! We finished the lesson with side pass exercise and Splash has really improved in side-pass right. Left is still really hard and we almost lost all forward movement. Splash and I did a few trail side-passes and “jumped” the flower/green cavalettis – very nice.
The temps are forecast to go up this week but perhaps we will get a YaYa Ride anyway.
